What Happens If Something Breaks During Your Farmhouse Stay?
· 6 min read· by Moinabad Farmhouses Team

Tell the caretaker, take two photos, and expect a fair cost for guest damage. How deposits, repairs and wear-and-tear are handled at Moinabad farmhouses.
If something breaks during your stay at a Moinabad farmhouse, the short answer is: tell the caretaker straight away, and expect to pay a fair cost for the item if your group caused the damage. How that cost is worked out, and whether it comes out of a deposit or is settled separately, depends on the farmhouse and its owner. The house rules on each farmhouse page tell you which pattern applies.
This post walks through what usually happens, what counts as damage versus normal wear, and how to protect yourself when the fault was not yours.
The first ten minutes after something breaks
Most friction over damage comes from silence, not from the breakage itself. A caretaker who finds a cracked table after you leave has no context. A caretaker who was told about it while you were there usually has a much simpler conversation with the owner.
- Make it safe. Broken glass near the pool or on the lawn is the most common hazard at a farmhouse. Keep children and bare feet away and pick up the large pieces with a dustpan or thick paper, not your fingers.
- Tell the caretaker. Walk over or call. Do not wait for check-out. If the caretaker is not on the property, message the number on your booking confirmation.
- Take two photos. One close-up, one showing where the item was. If you later disagree about the extent of the damage, these are your record.
- Do not attempt repairs. A guest fiddling with a pool pump or an electrical fitting usually makes the bill bigger and can be dangerous in a wet area.
- Ask how the owner wants to handle it. Some settle on the spot, some adjust the deposit, some send a figure on WhatsApp after getting a repair quote.
Damage versus wear and tear
You are not expected to return the farmhouse in showroom condition. Reasonable owners draw a line between things that simply happen when a house is used and things that happen because of carelessness.
| Situation | Usually treated as | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| A bulb stops working, a tap drips, a fan rattles | Wear and tear | No charge; mention it so the owner can fix it for the next group |
| A glass or plate breaks while washing up | Minor breakage | Often ignored, sometimes a token amount for the item |
| Party speaker dropped, TV remote lost, cushion badly stained | Guest damage | Replacement or cleaning cost at a fair market price |
| Bed frame broken from jumping, door panel cracked, garden lights pulled down | Guest damage | Repair cost; may exceed a small deposit, so it is settled separately |
| Pool filter trips, geyser fails, backup does not kick in during a power cut | Owner's responsibility | Report it; a fair owner tries to fix it during your stay |
Two things people forget are stains and smells. Haldi on white bedsheets, mehendi on sofa fabric and cigarette smoke inside an AC bedroom can all attract a cleaning charge even though nothing is technically broken. If your plan involves colour, cake or decorations, read our post on preventing damage at a farmhouse before you arrive.
Where the money comes from: deposits and direct settlement
Farmhouses in Moinabad handle damage money in one of three ways, and the farmhouse page tells you which:
- Refundable security deposit. Collected at check-in or along with the booking, returned after a check-out inspection minus any agreed damage. If nothing is broken, you get the full amount back.
- No deposit, pay only if something breaks. Common at smaller farmhouses. The caretaker notes the damage and the owner sends a figure.
- A mix. A modest deposit covers small items; anything larger is discussed separately.
Whichever applies, ask for the figure in writing (a WhatsApp message is enough) and keep the payment screenshot. If you paid a deposit, ask when it will be returned. "After the owner checks the house" usually means the same evening or the next day. Our guide on paying the security deposit online or at the farmhouse covers the timing in more detail.
What is a fair charge?
There is no price list for breakages, and we will not invent one here. The approach most owners and guests settle on looks like this:
- Replacement items (glasses, crockery, a lamp) are charged at roughly what a new one costs, not a premium.
- Repairs (a door, a bed, pool tiles) are charged on an actual quote from the person who fixes it. You can ask to see the quote.
- Deep cleaning is charged only when normal cleaning would not do, such as colour on upholstery or a soiled mattress.
- Nobody charges for inconvenience over and above the cost, unless the farmhouse has had to turn away the next booking because of the damage.
If a figure seems out of proportion, say so politely and ask how it was arrived at. If you booked through this site, you can also message us and we will help both sides reach a fair number. The contact page has the WhatsApp number.
When the breakage is not your fault
Village power cuts, a pump that was already failing, an AC that trips in the afternoon heat: these are the owner's problems, not yours. What you can reasonably expect:
- A caretaker who tries to sort it out or calls an electrician or plumber from the village.
- Power backup at many farmhouses, though it may not run every AC at once.
- Where something central to the booking, such as the pool, is unusable for most of your stay through no fault of yours, a partial refund or a credit toward another date is a fair ask. There is no fixed rule, so raise it calmly with the owner and, if needed, with us.
Report the problem while you are there. A complaint that first appears after check-out is hard for anyone to verify.
Preventing the common breakages
A few habits avoid most of the awkward conversations:
- No glass near the pool at all. Use steel or plastic tumblers outside.
- One person is in charge of the speaker and the TV remote for the whole stay.
- Kids do not jump on beds or climb the garden lighting, however tempting the lawn lights look at night.
- Haldi, colours and cake smash happen on the lawn, on a sheet you brought, never on the sofa.
- Walk the house in the first hour after arrival and point out anything already damaged, so it is not pinned on you later.
Read the rules before you book
Every farmhouse listed on this site shows its deposit and house rules on its own page, and they genuinely differ between a budget farmhouse in a village such as Aziz Nagar or Tolkatta and a luxury farmhouse with expensive fittings. If anything is unclear, ask on WhatsApp before you pay; a booking request is free and does not reserve the farmhouse. Then browse Moinabad farmhouses, pick your dates and see the live price.

Frequently asked questions
Will I lose my whole deposit if one glass breaks?
Almost never. Where a deposit exists, owners deduct the cost of the item and return the rest, and many ignore a single glass altogether. The deposit amount and rules are on each farmhouse page.
Who pays if the pool pump or AC fails during our stay?
The owner. Equipment failure that guests did not cause is the farmhouse's responsibility. Report it to the caretaker immediately so it can be fixed or, if it spoils the stay, discussed with the owner.
Do I have to pay for damage before I leave the farmhouse?
It varies. Some owners settle at check-out from the deposit, others send a repair quote on WhatsApp a day or two later. Ask for the figure in writing either way.
What if we disagree with a damage charge?
Ask how it was calculated and request the repair quote. If you booked through Moinabad Farmhouses, message the WhatsApp number on your confirmation and we will help both sides settle on a fair amount.
