Who Cleans the Farmhouse, and What Are Guests Expected to Do?
· 5 min read· by Moinabad Farmhouses Team

The farmhouse is cleaned before you arrive and after you leave. What happens in between, and what you are expected to do, is where expectations differ. Here is the typical split.
The farmhouse is cleaned before you arrive and after you leave; that is built into the price everywhere. During your stay, the caretaker usually looks after the pool, the lawn, the bins and the power backup, but not your dishes, your rooms or your party mess. What you are expected to do is leave the place in a reasonable state: waste bagged, kitchen tidy, nothing in the pool, nothing broken. Anything beyond reasonable may come out of the refundable deposit or as a cleaning charge, and exactly where that line sits varies by farmhouse.
Below is the typical division of labour, what the caretaker will and will not do, and what reasonable means at checkout.
Who does what: the typical split
| When | Host's side | Guest's side |
|---|---|---|
| Before check-in | Rooms cleaned, linen changed, bathrooms done, pool cleaned and run, lawn tidied, bins emptied | Nothing; walk through on arrival and flag anything that is not right |
| During the stay | Caretaker keeps the pool and lawn in order, empties outside bins, handles power and water issues | Your own dishes, your rooms, your rubbish into bags, spills wiped |
| At checkout | Walkthrough with the caretaker; deposit returned if all is well | Decor down, waste bagged, kitchen as found, towels in one place, a last look round the pool |
| After checkout | Full clean for the next guest | Nothing, unless the state of the house needed extra work |
The middle row is the one to notice. A Moinabad farmhouse is not a hotel with housekeeping on call; it is a private house with one caretaker who also has a gate, a pool and a generator to think about.

What the caretaker will and will not do
Caretakers vary, and some will happily do more than this, but as a baseline:
- Will: open and close the gate, show you how the pool, AC and water heater work, keep the pool clear of leaves, empty outside bins, deal with a power cut, call the owner if something breaks, and point you to the nearest shop in Moinabad town.
- Will not, as a rule: wash your dishes, cook unless a cook has been booked as an add-on, clear a party's worth of plates off the lawn, clean bedrooms mid-stay, or do your laundry.
- Depends on the farmhouse: helping with a barbecue, fetching ice, serving at a function. If you need any of this, ask the host when booking; it may be an add-on, and it is always a courtesy rather than a right.
Our post on whether the caretaker is present during your stay covers where they live, when they are around and how to reach them at night.
What "reasonable" means at checkout
Nobody expects you to mop. They do expect the house to look like a group stayed and tidied up, not like a group left in a hurry. A rough guide:
| Normal wear, no charge | Excess, may be charged |
|---|---|
| Used linen and towels, a sandy pool deck, crumbs on the dining table | Food ground into carpets or mattresses, stained sheets from haldi or mehendi |
| Dishes rinsed and stacked, a wiped stove | A kitchen with pans still full of food and oil on every surface |
| Rubbish bagged and left where the caretaker asks | Bottles, plates and balloon scraps across the lawn and in the hedges |
| Leaves in the pool | Food, glass, confetti or colour powder in the pool |
| Furniture moved for a game and put back | Furniture left out in the rain overnight or broken |
The left column is what the host's after-checkout clean is priced for. The right column is extra labour, sometimes a pool drain, and it is what deposits are deducted for at farmhouses that collect one. The house rules on each farmhouse page say whether there is a deposit and what it covers; the deposit and house rules post explains how it is usually handled.
Kitchen, linen and towels
The kitchen is where most checkout friction starts. Rinse what you used, bin the leftovers rather than leaving them in the fridge, and wipe the stove. If you cooked for thirty, say so in advance and ask whether the host can arrange help or a cleaning add-on; the cooking for 30 post has a workflow that keeps the mess manageable.
Linen and towels are the host's to wash; your part is to pile wet towels in the bathroom rather than on beds and sofas, and to keep pool towels separate from bath towels where the farmhouse provides both. Many farmhouses supply towels; some ask you to bring pool towels. Check the listing.
Big parties: plan the cleanup like the catering
A birthday for fifty or a sangeet night generates more waste in four hours than a family generates in two days. Treat cleanup as a line item: ask the caterer whether their staff clear plates and take their waste away, bring large bin bags, set up a collection point away from the pool, and assign two people to a last sweep of the lawn before check-out. The waste and cleanup post goes deeper, and it is worth reading before a function rather than after.
Hosts who regularly take functions sometimes offer a post-event cleaning charge upfront instead of relying on the deposit. If it is offered, it is usually the simpler arrangement for a large group.
Managed farmhouses and fixed routines
Farmhouses looked after by a management team rather than an individual owner tend to run a more standardised cleaning routine, with a set checklist before and after each booking. If a predictable standard matters to you, the Maastays-managed farmhouses in Moinabad filter lists them; ask about the routine before you book if you have specific needs, such as an allergy to a cleaning product.
The checkout walkthrough
At most farmhouses the caretaker walks the property with you at check-out. Make it quick by doing your own round ten minutes earlier: decor down, bags out, pool clear, kitchen wiped, AC and lights off, nothing left in the rooms. Point out anything that broke, rather than hoping nobody notices; owners are far more relaxed about an honest report than a surprise. The checkout checklist is a one-screen list to pull up on your phone.
Before you book
Read the house rules on the farmhouse page for the deposit, cleaning charges and anything specific about the kitchen or the pool, and ask on WhatsApp (+91 91827 69746) if you are planning a function. Then browse the Moinabad farmhouse listings and check live dates for the slot you want.

Frequently asked questions
Does the farmhouse get cleaned during our stay?
Usually not the rooms or the kitchen. The caretaker keeps the pool, lawn and outside bins in order and handles power or water issues; cleaning your own dishes and rooms during the stay is up to you. Some hosts can arrange extra help as an add-on.
Do we have to wash the dishes before checkout?
Rinse and stack them, wipe the stove and bin leftovers. A full wash is not expected, but a kitchen left with food in every pan is the kind of excess that leads to a cleaning charge or a deposit deduction.
Is there a cleaning charge at Moinabad farmhouses?
Standard cleaning is included in the price. A charge or a deposit deduction applies only when the house needs extra work, such as food in the pool, stained linen or a lawn full of party waste. The house rules on each listing say how the farmhouse handles it.
Are towels and linen provided?
Bed linen and bath towels usually are; pool towels vary by farmhouse. Check the listing or ask on WhatsApp, and pile used towels in the bathroom rather than on the beds when you leave.
