Is the Caretaker Present During Your Stay?

The farmhouse at Hidden Leaf Farmhouse, Moinabad

At most Moinabad farmhouses a caretaker lives on site through your stay. What they handle, what they don't, and how to set expectations at check-in.

At most Moinabad farmhouses, yes: a caretaker lives on the property or very close by and is around for the whole of your stay. They open the gate, hand over the house, keep the pool and power running and lock up after you leave. They are not, unless you have booked it separately, a cook, a waiter or a cleaner on call through the night. A few farmhouses, mostly smaller or owner-run ones, hand over the keys and leave you to yourselves with a phone number. The farmhouse page or a quick WhatsApp question tells you which kind you are booking.

Knowing what the caretaker is for makes the stay smoother for both sides. Here is the honest picture.

What the caretaker usually does

  • Opens the gate at check-in, checks IDs and the guest count against the booking, and walks you through the house: geysers, AC remotes, the pool, where the switches and the backup are.
  • Collects the security deposit where the farmhouse takes one at the gate, and returns it at check-out after a look around.
  • Runs the pool filter, switches lawn lights on and off, starts the generator during a village power cut.
  • Reminds you when the outdoor music time ends and asks you to move the speaker indoors.
  • Sets up extras you have booked, such as a bonfire or a barbecue stand.
  • Calls the owner, an electrician or a plumber if something stops working.
  • Keeps outsiders at the gate: delivery riders, cab drivers, curious neighbours.

What the caretaker usually does not do

  • Cook. A cook is a separate add-on at farmhouses that offer one; see farmhouses with a cook in Moinabad. Some caretakers will make tea or help light the barbecue, but treat that as a courtesy, not a service.
  • Serve or clear up during the party. Washing your vessels, clearing plates and picking up bottles from the lawn are your group's job unless the house rules say otherwise.
  • Run errands. A caretaker may fetch ice or milk from the village shop if asked kindly and given money, but you cannot count on it. Stock up in the city or Moinabad town.
  • Watch your children near the pool. Never. Pool supervision is entirely on the adults in your group.
  • Bend the house rules. Asking the caretaker to allow music past the cutoff or extra guests beyond the cap puts them in a difficult position with the owner. The answer is no, and it should be.

Where they stay, and how much you will see them

Caretaker quarters are typically a room near the gate or at the back of the plot, separate from the main house. Expect to see them at check-in, once or twice during the day for the pool and lights, around the time outdoor music has to stop, and at check-out. The rest of the time they stay out of the way. If your group would prefer fewer interruptions, say so politely when you arrive and agree on specific times; most caretakers are glad to have a clear plan.

Language is usually Telugu, often with working Hindi or Urdu, and a little English. Simple sentences, a WhatsApp message with a photo, or a quick call to the owner solves most things.

Night-time: who to call at 1 am

For a night stay, the caretaker normally sleeps on the property. Wake them for a genuine problem: the backup has not started, there is no water, a guest is unwell, the gate needs opening for a cab. Our post on medical emergencies at a farmhouse covers the serious cases. For small things, like a remote that does not work, wait for morning.

Farmhouses without a resident caretaker

A minority of Moinabad farmhouses are handed over on a key basis. The owner or a neighbour meets you at the gate, shows you around, and leaves. These suit small families and quiet groups who want the place to themselves, and they put more on you: switching on the pool filter, managing the gas cylinder, locking up. For a larger party, a farmhouse with someone on site is the safer choice. If you want a more defined service standard, look at Maastays managed farmhouses in Moinabad, which come with a set check-in process and a support contact beyond the caretaker.

Working well with the caretaker

  • Introduce one person from your group as the point of contact. Ten people giving instructions leads to none being followed.
  • Ask at check-in: where are you if we need you, what time does outdoor music stop, when should we expect you to come by?
  • Do not expect them to clean mid-stay. Our post on who cleans the farmhouse and when sets out the usual split.
  • A tip at the end is appreciated and entirely optional, as is a plate from your dinner. Neither buys a bent rule.
  • Be courteous. The caretaker is often the person who tells the owner whether your group is welcome back.

Check before you book

Each farmhouse page on this site describes what is on site, and the WhatsApp number is there for the questions a listing cannot answer, such as whether the caretaker speaks Hindi or whether anyone will be around overnight. Frequently asked questions

Does every Moinabad farmhouse have a caretaker on site?

Most do, living in separate quarters on the property. A few smaller or owner-run farmhouses hand over keys and leave a phone number instead. The farmhouse page or a WhatsApp question will confirm which.

Will the caretaker cook for us?

Not by default. Cooking is a separate add-on at farmhouses that offer a cook. Some caretakers help with tea or lighting the barbecue as a courtesy, but you should bring or arrange your own food.

Can we ask the caretaker to leave the property during our stay?

Usually not, because they are responsible for the house, pool and power. You can ask them to limit visits to agreed times, and most are happy to stay in their quarters otherwise.

Should we tip the caretaker?

It is optional and appreciated, especially after a long night stay or a large party. There is no fixed amount, and a tip never changes the house rules.
