An Evening at Gandipet (Osman Sagar) From Your Farmhouse
· 5 min read· by Moinabad Farmhouses Team

Osman Sagar sits just next to the Moinabad farmhouse belt. Here is how to slip away for a sunset by the lake and get back to the farmhouse safely for dinner.
If you are staying at a farmhouse in Moinabad, Osman Sagar is one of the easiest short outings you can make. The reservoir, better known to most Hyderabadis as Gandipet, lies right beside the farmhouse belt, and its park and viewpoint make a calm place to watch the sun go down before heading back for dinner by the pool.
The trick is planning it as a short, light outing rather than a big expedition: leave in the late afternoon, enjoy the lake as the light changes, and be back before the village roads get too dark.
A lake with a story
Osman Sagar and its twin, Himayat Sagar, were built in the early 20th century on the Musi river and its tributary the Esi. They had two jobs: protect the city from floods, and supply it with drinking water. That history explains why the lakes feel the way they do. They are working reservoirs, not leisure lakes, and swimming is not allowed.
It also makes for a nice conversation with children on the way. Telling them that the water in front of them was meant to keep a whole city safe and supplied gives a quiet evening view a little more weight.

Why go in the evening
- The light. Late afternoon into sunset is when the water and the open sky look their best, and when phone photos come out well without effort.
- The heat drops. For most of the year, mid-afternoon is too warm to enjoy an open viewpoint. By evening it is pleasant, especially between November and February.
- It fits the farmhouse rhythm. You check in during the early afternoon, settle in, swim, and then step out for an hour or two while the barbecue coals are getting ready.
- It gives the group a pause. On a long stay, a change of scene breaks up the afternoon and evening nicely.
Park timings and any entry rules can change, so check before you set out.
Who goes and who stays: a sample plan
A farmhouse group rarely moves as one unit, and it does not have to. A simple split keeps everyone happy.
| Group | Evening plan |
|---|---|
| Grandparents and anyone who wants a quiet hour | Go to Gandipet for the sunset, then return for an early dinner |
| Children | Go along for the view and a walk, or stay back and swim with an adult watching |
| The cooks | Stay back, marinate, and light the barbecue if the farmhouse allows it |
| Teenagers and friends | Go for photos and come back before the music starts |
Whatever split you choose, make sure at least one adult stays at the farmhouse if anyone remains behind, and that the caretaker knows some of the group are stepping out and returning later.
Getting there and back
Gandipet is close to the farmhouses, but the route back is the part to plan. Many farmhouses sit a few kilometres off the main road on village lanes that can be very dark at night.
- Save the farmhouse pin. Before you leave, drop the farmhouse's location pin into every driver's phone.
- Note a landmark. Look for an easy landmark at the turn-off from the main road on your way out, so you recognise it in the dark.
- Leave the lake as the light fades. You get the best of the sunset and avoid the darkest part of the drive.
- Send a sober driver. If drinks are planned for the evening, they start after everyone is back. Never drink and drive, especially on unlit village roads.
- Weekends are busier. The roads around the lakes and around Chilkur can be slow on weekends and festival days, so allow extra time.
If you are coming in from Mehdipatnam or the old city, you may already have driven past the other reservoir on the way. Our post on the Himayat Sagar drive covers that route.
Small things that make the evening better
- Go on a weekday if you can. A Monday-to-Thursday stay usually means a quieter park, emptier roads and a lower farmhouse rate as well.
- Photograph the people, not just the water. Sunset shots of the lake look alike; a photo of grandparents on a bench with the sky behind them is the one you will keep.
- Keep it short. An hour or so at the lake is plenty. The point is a change of scene, not a second trip.
What to carry for an hour by the lake
- A light jacket or shawl in winter, when evenings near the water turn cool
- Mosquito repellent, particularly after the monsoon
- Water and a small snack, with a bag to bring all wrappers back
- Comfortable footwear for a walk along the park
- A torch or phone torch for the walk to the car after sunset
Keep children close near the water's edge, and remember this is drinking-water supply for the city: nothing goes into the lake.
Pairing it with other nearby spots
Chilkur Balaji temple stands on the banks of Osman Sagar, so some families do darshan in the morning and come back to the lake in the evening. If that is your plan, our guide to the 11 and 108 pradakshinas will help you time the temple visit. For other ideas, see our guide to places to visit near Moinabad.
If the lake and temple are the main draw, staying at one of the farmhouses near Chilkur Balaji temple keeps every drive short. Look at the farmhouses around Aziz Nagar too, since Aziz Nagar is where the Himayat Sagar road enters Moinabad.
