The Himayat Sagar Drive: The Scenic Way to Moinabad
· 5 min read· by Moinabad Farmhouses Team

Skip the expressway once and take the lake road. Here is when the Himayat Sagar drive to Moinabad is at its best, how it compares with the ORR, and what to watch for.
The scenic way into Moinabad is the road past Himayat Sagar. Instead of the fast, fenced Outer Ring Road, you leave the city via Langar Houz, run alongside the reservoir, and arrive in Moinabad through Aziz Nagar. It is toll-free, it is greener, and on the right day it turns the drive to your farmhouse into part of the weekend rather than something to get through.
It is not always the fastest option, and the evening traffic near Langar Houz is real. This post is about when the lake road is worth it, who it suits best, and how to enjoy it safely.
Lake road or ORR? A quick comparison
| Himayat Sagar road | Outer Ring Road | |
|---|---|---|
| Toll | None | Tolled |
| Feel of the drive | Open views, water, fields and trees | Fast, wide expressway |
| Best for | Mehdipatnam, Tolichowki, the old city, and Secunderabad via the PV Narasimha Rao Expressway | Gachibowli, Kokapet, Kondapur and the airport |
| Weak spot | Busy near Langar Houz in the evenings | Toll cost for every car; Friday-evening traffic still applies |
| Where you enter Moinabad | Via Aziz Nagar | Via the Chevella road |
For every route from every corner of the city, see our full guide on how to reach Moinabad from Hyderabad. Here we are focusing on the lake road itself.
Who should take the scenic route
- West and south-west Hyderabad. From Mehdipatnam, Tolichowki and the old city, the lake road is the natural way in.
- North Hyderabad, with time to spare. From Secunderabad, Begumpet or Kompally, you can take the PV Narasimha Rao Expressway and then the Himayat Sagar road. We cover that in more detail in our post on reaching Moinabad from Secunderabad.
- Anyone staying near Aziz Nagar. If your farmhouse is on that side of Moinabad, the lake road delivers you almost to the door. Browse farmhouses around Aziz Nagar if a short final stretch matters to you.
- Families with older relatives. Many grandparents simply prefer a slower road with something to look at.
If you are coming from Gachibowli or the Financial District, the ORR is usually the more direct choice, roughly 30 to 45 minutes outside peak traffic. You can still try the lake road on the way home for a change.
When the lake road is at its best
Season
The drive changes through the year. In the monsoon, roughly June to September, the fields turn green and the reservoir starts filling. Just after the rains, the countryside looks its freshest. From November to February the air is cooler and clear mornings make the drive a pleasure with the windows down. From March to June it is hot, and the lake road is best driven early in the morning. Our post on Moinabad in the monsoon describes the rainy season in more detail.
Time of day
- Morning: the easiest traffic and the softest light. Ideal for day outings.
- Around midday: fine for reaching a farmhouse in time for the usual early-afternoon check-in.
- Friday evening: the Langar Houz stretch slows down, and the whole trip can take about twice as long.
- Sunday late morning: a relaxed drive home after a typical late-morning check-out.
Making the drive part of the trip
A few habits turn the commute into a small outing of its own.
- Make it a convoy plan, not a race. When several cars are going to the same farmhouse, agree on one meeting point near Aziz Nagar so nobody arrives alone at a village gate.
- Stop safely, if at all. If you want a photo of the water, pull over only where it is clearly safe and legal to do so, well off the carriageway.
- Remember the lake's purpose. Himayat Sagar and its twin, Osman Sagar, were built in the early 20th century for flood protection and drinking water. No swimming, and nothing goes into the water.
- Shop before the lake. Shops near the farmhouses are small. Use the city stretch before Langar Houz, or Moinabad town, for groceries, ice and charcoal.
- Notice the change. Somewhere after the reservoir, the city falls away and you start seeing open fields and mango orchards. Point it out to the kids; it is the moment the weekend really begins.
- Pick a playlist for the lake stretch. It sounds small, but groups that treat the drive as part of the outing arrive in a far better mood than those who spent it checking maps.
One more thing: if anyone in your group gets carsick, the steadier pace of the lake road is often kinder than weaving through expressway traffic. Seat them in front and keep the windows open for the green stretch.
Driving the lake road after dark
The main road is straightforward, but the last few kilometres to many farmhouses are on village lanes that can be very dark at night. If you are arriving after sunset:
- Drop the farmhouse's location pin into every driver's phone before leaving home.
- Message the caretaker with your expected arrival time, and ask for a landmark near the turn-off.
- Watch for two-wheelers, cattle and pedestrians on unlit stretches.
- Keep your phone charged; a car charger helps.
- On the way back after a party, the driver should be someone who has not been drinking. Never drink and drive.
Beyond the drive
The lake road also links you to other nearby outings. Gandipet's park and viewpoint is at Osman Sagar, and Chilkur Balaji temple stands on its banks. Our guide to places to visit near Moinabad gathers these together.
