Kite Flying in Moinabad's Open Skies
· 5 min read· by Moinabad Farmhouses Team

Open fields, few tall buildings and a private lawn make Moinabad a good place to fly a kite. Here is how to plan a kite day at a farmhouse.
If your terrace in the city is boxed in by apartment blocks and cables, a Moinabad farmhouse gives you the opposite: wide open fields, low buildings and a private lawn to launch from. Sankranti in January is the obvious time to go, but any breezy weekend in the cooler months works for a family kite day.
Here is how to plan one, from buying kites in Hyderabad to keeping the youngest flyers safe.
Why Moinabad works for kites
Moinabad mandal is mostly open land: mango orchards, fields and scattered farmhouses on the city's western edge, past the ORR along the Chevella road. There are far fewer tall towers to block or churn the wind than in Gachibowli or Kondapur, and on a private farmhouse lawn you are not competing with dozens of neighbours' strings.
That said, every farmhouse is different. Some have big open lawns; others are compact, with trees close to the house. Look at the property photos and ask the host whether there is open space well clear of trees, power lines and the pool.

When to go
Sankranti
Kite flying is at the heart of Sankranti celebrations in Telangana, and a long weekend at a farmhouse lets the whole family celebrate together. Book early. Sankranti falls during the pleasant November to February season, when Moinabad farmhouses are in demand, and festival dates are priced like weekends. Our guide to booking a Moinabad farmhouse for a long weekend covers how far ahead to plan.
Other breezy days
Late afternoon is usually the best time for steady wind. Avoid the midday heat from March to June, and in the monsoon, from about June to September, gusty winds and sudden showers make kites hard to control and lightning is a real risk. Pack up at the first sign of thunder.
What to carry from the city
Shops near Moinabad farmhouses are small and will not stock kites, so buy everything before you leave Hyderabad.
- Kites in a few sizes. Small paper kites for children, a couple of sturdier ones for adults. Carry spares; kites tear.
- Plain cotton thread on a spool or charkhi. Avoid glass-coated or synthetic manja. It is dangerous to people and birds, and many places restrict it.
- Tape and spare sticks for quick repairs.
- Gloves or finger tape for long sessions.
- Caps, sunglasses and sunscreen. You will be looking up for hours.
- Water and snacks. Kite flying is surprisingly thirsty work.
Safety first, especially with kids
| Risk | What to do |
|---|---|
| Power lines | Fly only where there are no lines overhead. If a kite gets caught, let it go; never pull it down. |
| The pool | Never fly near the pool. People walking backwards while watching the sky can fall in. |
| Roofs and terraces | Stay off unprotected roofs. A lawn is safer. |
| Thread cuts | Use plain cotton thread; wear finger protection. |
| Birds | Wind up loose thread after you finish; never leave it in trees. |
| Leaving the compound | Nobody chases a lost kite into the fields or onto village roads. |
Pair each young child with an adult who holds the spool. Teach them to let go of the string if it starts pulling too hard.
Teaching a first-time flyer
- Stand with your back to the wind.
- Let a helper hold the kite a few steps away, facing you.
- On a gust, the helper lets go while you pull gently on the line.
- Let out thread slowly as the kite climbs. Tug gently to gain height, and ease off if it dives.
- When it is steady, hand over the spool and stand right behind the child.
Kids who have only ever seen kites from a balcony are usually thrilled within minutes.
Make it a festival day
Pair the kite session with Sankranti food. Many families bring homemade sweets and snacks from the city. Draw a muggu (rangoli) at the farmhouse entrance in the morning, fly kites in the afternoon, and finish with a bonfire in the evening if the farmhouse offers one as an add-on. For other festival ideas, see our guide to an Ugadi family lunch at a farmhouse.
Decoration, outside food and fire rules vary by farmhouse, so check the farmhouse page or ask on WhatsApp before you plan.
Games with kites
Once everyone has the hang of it, turn the afternoon into friendly competitions that do not involve cutting each other's lines:
- Highest kite: after ten minutes, the kite that is highest in the sky wins.
- Longest steady flight: who can keep their kite up without a dive the longest?
- Best homemade kite: give each team newspaper, sticks, glue and thread in the morning and judge the results by afternoon.
- Kite decorating: for younger children, plain kites and sketch pens are enough to keep them busy before the wind picks up.
Small prizes, like a new spool or a box of sweets, keep the mood light.
Day trip or overnight?
A kite day works as a day outing if you live in west Hyderabad: Gachibowli and the Financial District are usually roughly 30 to 45 minutes away outside peak traffic. But on Sankranti weekends, roads can be busy with people heading out of the city, so an overnight stay gives you a relaxed morning session with the best light and a calm afternoon. When is the best time to fly kites in Moinabad?
Late afternoons in the cooler months, especially around Sankranti in January. Avoid stormy monsoon days and the midday heat of summer.
