A Family Farmhouse Olympics: Events and Scoring
· 5 min read· by Moinabad Farmhouses Team

Ten events, a fair points system and a medal ceremony: a ready-made family Olympics for one afternoon at a Moinabad farmhouse.
A family farmhouse Olympics is an afternoon of ten short events, scored on a single board, with a medal ceremony at the end. The format fixes the usual problem with family games, which is that the cricket-playing cousins win everything and the aunts opt out by the second round. Spread the points across skill, luck and silliness, and a six-year-old and a sixty-year-old can both carry their team.
Here is a full set: team draw, ten events, a scoring table and a timetable that fits between lunch and the evening at a Moinabad farmhouse.
The team draw
Do not let families be teams. Mix them. Write every name on a chit, sort the chits into three piles by age band (under 12, 12 to 50, over 50) and draw one from each pile in turn into teams of six to eight. Each team picks a country, a Telangana district or a cricket franchise as its name and a colour. A ribbon on the wrist is enough uniform.
Appoint one neutral "Olympic committee" member who does not play, keeps the scoreboard and settles disputes. Give them a whistle and a chair in the shade; the role is more fun than it sounds.
The ten events
Every team enters every event. Each event names how many members take part, so the strong players cannot do everything.
- Opening relay (all members): a lap of the lawn passing a lemon on a spoon. Dropped lemon means you restart from the last marker.
- Six-ball cricket (3 per team): each batter faces six balls from the committee bowler in the box cricket cage or against a wall. Runs count; a catch ends the innings. Farmhouses listed under farmhouses with box cricket in Moinabad make this easy.
- Bucket pool toss (2 per team): throw five tennis balls into a bucket from a chalk line. Under-12s throw from a closer line.
- Gilli danda or seven stones (4 per team): the older members usually dominate this, which is the point.
- Memory tray (1 per team): twenty household objects under a cloth, shown for thirty seconds, write down as many as you remember. Grandparents win this more often than you expect.
- Balloon stomp (2 per team): balloon tied to each ankle; last one with an intact balloon wins. Keep it on the lawn, not the pool deck.
- Antakshari sprint (whole team): three minutes, songs must start with the letter the committee calls. One point per valid song.
- Slow cycle race (1 per team, if the farmhouse has a cycle or you bring one): last to cross the line without putting a foot down wins. Skip if there is no cycle; substitute a walking-backwards race.
- Pool noodle joust (2 per team, if the pool rules allow it): standing in the shallow end, knock the opponent's cap off with a foam noodle. Adults only, no glass anywhere near, and only at farmhouses that allow pool games. Otherwise run a water-balloon toss on the lawn.
- Closing tug of war (all members): a knockout bracket. Double points, so a team at the bottom can still finish on the podium.
Scoring that keeps it close
| Finish | Standard event | Opening relay | Closing tug of war |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | 10 | 10 | 20 |
| 2nd | 7 | 7 | 14 |
| 3rd | 5 | 5 | 10 |
| 4th and below | 3 | 3 | 6 |
| Did not enter | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Every team scores something for entering, so nobody is tempted to skip an event. Ties on the final board are broken by a one-round rock-paper-scissors between captains, which is both unfair and loved.
Bonus points, used sparingly
- Best team chant before the opening relay: 5 points
- Any team that fields a grandparent in the cricket event: 3 points
- Cleanest team area at the end of the afternoon: 5 points. This one quietly solves the cleanup.
The timetable
Ten events sound like a lot. They are not, if each one has a hard ten-minute limit and the committee keeps things moving.
- 2:30 Team draw, names, chants
- 2:45 Opening relay
- 3:00 Events 2 to 5, lawn and shade events alternated
- 3:45 Water and fruit break; update the board loudly
- 4:00 Events 6 to 9
- 4:45 Closing tug of war bracket
- 5:00 Medal ceremony, then everyone into the pool
In summer, shift the whole thing an hour later and run the shade events first. In the pleasant months from November to February, the afternoon timing works as written.
Medals and the ceremony
Buy cheap gold, silver and bronze medals online before the trip, one per person, plus a small trophy that the winning team keeps until the next family outing. A podium is three different-height chairs. Play a national anthem of the winning team's choice on the speaker. Take the photo with the pool behind; it is the picture that ends up on the family group.
Kit list
- Spoons and lemons, a bucket, ten tennis balls, chalk or a rope for lines
- A pack of balloons, string, a hand pump
- A tray and twenty small objects for the memory event
- A tug-of-war rope; two pool noodles if the pool event is on
- Chart paper and a marker for the scoreboard
- Medals, trophy, ribbons
Pack all of it in the city. Shops near Moinabad farmhouses are small and will not stock pool noodles.
The farmhouse that suits it
You need a lawn big enough for a relay, shade for the committee and the memory tray, and ideally a cricket cage. For a mixed-age clan, kids-friendly farmhouses in Moinabad tend to have the kids' pool and the gentler layout. If the family runs to thirty or more, start from farmhouses for large groups and check the guest cap, since extra guests are usually charged per person. For a lighter, rules-free version of the same idea, see a Moinabad farmhouse games tournament.
Then check live dates. Weekends and holidays cost more than Monday to Thursday, and the pool-and-lawn farmhouses go first on long weekends.

Frequently asked questions
How many events should a family farmhouse Olympics have?
Ten short events with a ten-minute cap each fills an afternoon. Mix skill, luck and silly events so that children, parents and grandparents each have something they can win.
How do you score a family Olympics fairly?
Give points for every finishing position, including a few for simply entering, and double the points for the final event so no team is out of it early. Have one neutral scorekeeper.
Can we play pool games at a Moinabad farmhouse?
It depends on the farmhouse; some allow pool games and some restrict them. Check the house rules on the listing or ask on WhatsApp, keep glass away from the pool and keep water events for adults.
What equipment do farmhouses in Moinabad provide for games?
Many have a cricket set, carrom and sometimes badminton, but it varies. Bring balloons, rope, balls, chalk, medals and anything else from the city, as nearby shops are small.
