Celebrating Bathukamma at a Moinabad Farmhouse

A hands-on guide to Bathukamma at a private Moinabad farmhouse: getting the flowers, building the stack as a group, the evening circle of songs and what to do about immersion.
Bathukamma is a festival of flowers, women, songs and water, and it fits a Moinabad farmhouse unusually well: there is a lawn for the evening circle, a veranda for stacking the flowers in the morning, and open fields all around where the festival originally belongs. This post is about actually doing it at a farmhouse, from where the flowers come from to what you do at the end when it is time for the immersion.
It assumes a family or a group of families from Hyderabad booking a farmhouse for one of the nine days, most likely Saddula Bathukamma, the big final day before Dussehra, or a weekend that falls within the festival.
Which day to pick
Bathukamma runs for nine days in September or October, ending with Saddula Bathukamma. The final day is the grand one and the one most families want, but it also falls on whatever weekday it falls on, and if that is a Saturday the farmhouses are busy and priced as a weekend. A weekday Bathukamma at a farmhouse is cheaper and quieter, and the evening circle feels no different. Check your group's calendar against the festival dates, then select the date on a farmhouse page to see live availability and the full price.
Early October in Moinabad is usually the end of the monsoon: fields green, air washed, evenings mild. The post on Moinabad in October and November describes the season; this one stays with the festival.

The flowers, and where to get them
A Bathukamma is built from seasonal flowers stacked in rings on a plate. The traditional ones:
- Tangedu – the small yellow flowers that give the stack its colour.
- Gunugu – the pale pink and white spikes, often dyed for brighter rings.
- Banthi – marigold, in orange and yellow.
- Chamanthi – chrysanthemum, white and yellow.
- Gummadi – the pumpkin flower and its leaves for the top and the base.
- Lotus, hibiscus or any garden flower for colour between the rings.
Buy them in the city flower markets the evening before or very early on the day; during the festival week the markets stock everything you need, usually already sorted by type. Carry them in open baskets, not plastic bags, so they do not sweat on the drive. The fields around Moinabad do have wild tangedu and gunugu in season, but do not pick from someone's farm; ask the caretaker if there is common land nearby, and otherwise bring everything from the city.
Along with the flowers: a wide brass or steel plate for each Bathukamma, thread, a small pot of turmeric for the Gauramma on top, and a bucket of water to keep the stems fresh.
Building it together in the morning
The stacking is the social heart of the festival, and the farmhouse veranda in the cool of a morning is a good place for it. Spread mats, put the flower baskets in the middle, and let the older women lead. The rings go from wide at the base to narrow at the top, alternating colours, and the Gauramma made from turmeric sits at the peak. Children hand flowers and learn the names. Keep the finished Bathukammas in the shade with a wet cloth over the base, and keep them well away from the pool deck.
A farmhouse with a wide covered veranda or a large living room is worth looking for, as a September shower can arrive mid-morning. The farmhouses for large groups in Moinabad page is a useful filter if several families are coming.
The evening circle on the lawn
As the sun drops, the Bathukammas are carried out to the lawn and set in the centre. The women form a circle around them and the songs begin, the clapping and the slow steps around the flowers. This is the part a farmhouse does better than an apartment courtyard: space, sky and nobody's car in the way.
- Light the lawn: string lights on the gazebo, diyas along the edge, or the farmhouse's own lawn lights if it has them.
- Keep a speaker handy for the songs the group does not know all the words to, but let the singing lead.
- Outdoor music at most farmhouses is allowed until a set evening hour and then moves indoors; the hour varies by farmhouse, so check the listing and plan the circle to finish before it.
- Wear the sarees and have the cameras ready at sunset, when the lawn and the stacks look their best. The post on sunrise and sunset in Moinabad explains the light.
The immersion question
At the end of the evening the Bathukammas are traditionally carried to a tank or a lake and floated away. At a farmhouse this needs thought. The swimming pool is not the place: the water is treated, the flowers clog filters, and no host will allow it. Your realistic options:
| Option | How | Ask first |
|---|---|---|
| A pond or tank on the property | Some farmhouses have a farm pond or an irrigation tank | The host, on WhatsApp, before booking |
| A village tank nearby | Villages often hold their own immersion at a local tank | The caretaker; go as guests, respectfully |
| A large tub at the farmhouse | A symbolic floating in a wide basin on the lawn, flowers composted after | Nobody; simplest and clean |
| Carry back to the city | Immerse at a city point the next morning | Keep the stacks damp overnight |
Whatever you choose, collect every leaf and thread afterwards. Flowers can go into the farmhouse compost or a field edge if the caretaker agrees; plastic, thread and plates go back in the car.
Food for the day
Bathukamma food is simple and shareable. Sattu pindi, malida, and the nine-day prasadam dishes travel well and need no reheating. Add a proper lunch of Telangana food if the group is spending the day, and chai with snacks after the circle. Shops near the farmhouses are small, so bring everything from the city or Moinabad town, and check the outside-food rule on the listing, which differs by farmhouse. Our Telangana food for a farmhouse lunch post has a menu.
Booking the farmhouse for the festival
Pick a farmhouse with a lawn large enough for the circle and a veranda for the morning, from the full list of Moinabad farmhouses. If Dussehra follows within the week and you want to stay on, the farmhouses for night stay in Moinabad page covers overnight options, and the Moinabad farmhouse booking guide walks through the request and confirmation on WhatsApp. House rules on decorations, music timings and deposits vary by property; ask about the lawn lights, the music cutoff and the immersion options in the same message.

Frequently asked questions
Can we immerse the Bathukamma in the farmhouse pool?
No. Pool water is treated and flowers damage the filters, so hosts do not allow it. Ask whether the farmhouse has a farm pond or tank, use a wide basin on the lawn, or carry the stacks back to the city for immersion.
Where do we buy Bathukamma flowers near Moinabad?
Buy tangedu, gunugu, banthi and chamanthi in the city flower markets, which stock everything during the festival week. Shops near the farmhouses are small, and do not pick flowers from private farmland.
Is it better to book a weekday or the final Saddula Bathukamma day?
The final day is the grand one, but if it falls on a weekend the farmhouses are busier and priced higher. A weekday within the nine days is cheaper and quieter, and the evening celebration feels the same.
How late can we sing and play music on the lawn?
Most farmhouses allow outdoor music until a set evening hour, after which it moves indoors. The hour varies by farmhouse, so check the listing and plan the circle to finish before it.
